The evolution of the Wayzata Depot Garden Railroad

href="data/images/aimg_6612~7266.jpg">The yard west of the Wayzata depot was about to change. Dirt arrived, and loads of landscape blocks for a wall. The base was leveled and blocks started going down.
As the wall went up the dirt was redistributed.
The dirt was compacted to provide a good base for the layout. Topsoil was added to promote plant growth. Wood chips were used to reduce mud issues
during the layout construction. A couple of temporary track loops were
created as an interim testbed. It didn't take long for visitors to start
showing up.
A more permanent loop was built just before
winter arrived.
Running trains in Minnesota during the
winter presents some challenges! As Spring arrived a more permanent layout
was begun.
We began experimenting with a dual loop
layout. A wooden tressle was built and ready to be
installed. The tressle was installed and the track was
ballasted. A village was begun on the hill to the West. Vegitation was added and began to take root. A farm and depot occupy the East end. The village church overlooks the growing
village. Visitors were arriving in ever-increasing
numbers. Occasionally a real train puts on a show on
the adjacent tracks. Sometimes the kids bring their parents -
sometimes the parents bring their kids. Newly arrived minature trees awaited
planting on a nice summer day. Kids keep a close eye on passing trains. The garden railroad has become a popular
gathering spot in Wayzata.
